Red Canyon, Sardinia, Italy 2015

This song I wrote after an experience travelling around Sardinia, Italy. On the west of the island there is a large national park where the Gennargentu mountains abruptly meet the Bay of Orosei. You’re not meant to sleep in the national park and most of the isolated beaches are only reached by foot from dirt roads through the mountains. After finding a boat that does a few day trips to one of these beaches, my boyfriend and I snuck away from the beach before the last boat returned to the village to camp in the canyons that stretched back from the cove. There was no one around apart from hundreds of nesting sand martins in the canyon walls and when the sun dropped, a luminous milky-way. In the early hours of the morning I woke up with a strange feeling like something ominous was coming. The wind was sweeping down the gorge carrying a bad feeling with it. Suddenly there was a roar of vehicles coming down from the mountains and gunshots started going off, ricocheting all around the walls so there was no way to tell where they were coming from. As we were camped under some trees we were fairly hidden but I was imagining men with heat detector guns and was weighing up hiding further into the bushes or calling out to stop firing for fear of being mistaken for a deer or whateve
