Embrace, Southampton, UK, 2020
Painted during the Corona Virus epidemic of 2020. As a traveller, many of the people you care for become scattered across the world. You can’t be with them all the time, yet you often feel their presence and sense that they can feel it too. I felt the absence of the people I love scattered across the world strongly during the beginning of lock down, when the future of freedom of movement was so uncertain. Having arrived into England from Argentina two days before lock down started to visit my family, England was where I passed confinement. Fortunately for me I could be with family, but the distance from loved ones overseas felt very wide. Nature during this time was such a powerful source of strength and therapy, and it was the most wonderful thing to see it begin to reclaim some of the space that humans had taken from it whilst most of the world were confined to their houses. This painting is an embrace not only of those we love but of nature too.
